The St. Augustine Lighthouse

Located on the northern edge of Anastasia Island, has been standing tall at 164 feet since the mid-1500s. This remarkable structure has witnessed significant historical events, including the colonization of the Americas, the Hundred Years’ War, and the birth and subsequent division of the United States. As a steadfast guardian, the lighthouse has served as a beacon of hope through wars, plagues, and power struggles, guiding mariners in times of darkness.

Initially, the Spanish constructed a series of wooden watchtowers as lookouts along the coast. Sentries positioned atop these towers would keep an eye on the sea, alerting the town of any approaching vessels. To communicate quickly, a canoe was kept close by, allowing the sentries to reach the town and warn its inhabitants. The first and most northern of these 16th-century Spanish watchtowers eventually evolved into the St. Augustine Lighthouse, making it the earliest permanent aid-to-navigation in the Continental United States.
