A riverfront coffee, a beach walk, a quick grocery run. Small things tell you a surprising amount about a place. If you’re thinking about moving to Jacksonville, give yourself a weekend to try a few versions of everyday life before filling the calendar with house tours.
Choose two of the three routes below—one for each day—then return to the area you liked most. This is a scouting weekend across Greater Jacksonville, including the separate beach cities and Nocatee. It is a starting shortlist, not a tour of every neighborhood.
A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM.
Make two days count.
Pick the places you are curious about. Leave enough space to notice how they feel.
Have dinner near your lodging. Pick two routes and write down your three non-negotiables. Keep your arrival night easy.
Allow a relaxed half day for one route, lunch and the drives between stops. If Nocatee is on your list, do it today: the Welcome Center is closed Sunday and Monday.
Try your second route in the morning. Spend the afternoon back in your favorite area: take a different street, run an errand and see what still feels good.
Before deciding on a home, check the actual drive to work at your departure time. If you cannot stay, use a future departure estimate and arrange a weekday return.
Where should we stay?
Choose lodging near one of your two routes. A beach base lets you sample coastal mornings; a Riverside or San Marco base puts a different daily rhythm outside your door. Before booking, price parking and map both route starts from the hotel. One central-looking pin does not mean every drive is short.

ROUTE 01 · Atlantic Beach · Neptune Beach · Jacksonville Beach
Coastal mornings
Begin where Atlantic Boulevard meets the ocean, then work south. The point is to compare a walkable commercial center, a neighborhood park and a practical beach-access stop. Drive between these pockets; the map is not suggesting one continuous walk.

Beaches Town Center
Atlantic Boulevard at First Street, Atlantic Beach / Neptune Beach, FLAllow 45–60 minutes
Park legally once and explore the storefronts around the end of Atlantic Boulevard. Walk toward the ocean, then turn back into the shopping streets. Compare the public sidewalk experience with the exact street where you might live.

Jarboe Park

This stop shifts the visit from vacation mode to a neighborhood routine. Take a gentle loop and look at the recreation spaces you would actually use.

Use the park’s designated parking and posted hours. Courts, events and facilities can have separate rules.
Oceanfront Park
First Street S between Fifth and Sixth Avenues S, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250Allow 30–45 minutes
Finish with the simple beach-access question: how much effort does getting from the car to the sand take? The city lists dune walkovers, sheltered picnic areas and an accessible ramp here.
TRY THIS WHILE YOU’RE HERETime your own parking-to-beach walk. Look at the ramp and surface that work for your group, then decide whether this feels like an easy repeat visit.

Check posted parking restrictions and current beach conditions. An accessible ramp does not make every part of the sandy beach accessible.
Make room for lunch.
Make your breakfast or lunch stop in Beaches Town Center. Pick a place you would actually return to, check the current menu, and notice whether parking and waiting fit your routine.
One thing to check twice.
Test your route west over the Intracoastal at the time you would actually travel. Beach proximity and a manageable commute are two separate questions.
ROUTE 02 · Avondale · Riverside · San Marco
Riverfront & neighborhood streets
Start in Avondale, continue to Riverside, then cross the river to San Marco. These are three distinct stops with drives between them. Each gives you a different place to park, walk and notice the details that an online listing cannot show.

St. Johns Avenue near Ingleside Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32205Allow 45–60 minutes
Browse the compact shopping district, then look at the transition from storefronts to nearby residential streets. Mature trees and older architecture are part of the setting; the experience changes block by block.

Use legal street or designated customer parking. Browse from public sidewalks and respect private homes.
Memorial Park
1620 Riverside Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32204Allow 30–45 minutes
Take in the St. Johns River, the Life sculpture and the open lawn. Then look back toward the surrounding streets. This is a useful outdoor-time stop between two commercial districts.
TRY THIS WHILE YOU’RE HERESit for ten minutes without planning the next stop. Notice the sound, sun exposure and how you would use the park on an ordinary day.

This is a public outdoor stop. Check park notices and weather; riverfront sections can be exposed to sun and wind.
San Marco Square & Balis Park

Use Balis Park as your starting point for the Square. Explore the surrounding shops and food options, then look at the street connections beyond the central triangle.
TRY THIS WHILE YOU’RE HEREChoose a destination you might visit weekly. Check its opening hours and the practical walk or drive from a possible home.

Cross at marked crossings. Balis Park is in San Marco Square; it is a different place from Balis Community Center.
Make room for lunch.
Build lunch into Avondale’s St. Johns Avenue shopping district or San Marco Square. The neighborhood tourism guides link current businesses; choose your meal by location so lunch helps the scouting trip.
One thing to check twice.
A walkable shopping district does not make every address in the surrounding neighborhood walkable. Try the exact home-to-destination path, including crossings, shade and sidewalk continuity.
ROUTE 03 · Nocatee · Ponte Vedra area
Planned-community everyday life
Use Nocatee for a focused look at a master-planned community in the wider Jacksonville area. Start with information, test an ordinary errand, then visit the public community park. Keep any model-home or amenity tour as a separate, confirmed appointment.

Nocatee Welcome Center

Start with a current community map and ask how the villages connect to shops, parks and the roads you would use. The official Welcome Center page welcomes walk-ins and offers scheduled visits.

Town Center grocery & lunch stop
Publix at Nocatee Town Center, 120 Marketside Avenue, Ponte Vedra, FL 32081Allow 30–60 minutes
Buy something you actually need. The useful question is how this trip works from your potential home—not simply whether the community has a supermarket.

Nocatee Community Park
707 Nocatee Center Way, Ponte Vedra, FLAllow 30–45 minutes
The county lists this 33-acre public park with a playground, multipurpose fields, tennis courts and a dog park. It gives you a public recreation stop without assuming private amenity access.

County-listed hours: dawn to dusk. Navigation may also identify the approach as Little River Road. Use the named public park destination; the nearby water parks have separate access rules.
Make room for lunch.
Have lunch in the Town Center after the grocery stop. Use Nocatee’s current business directory to choose a restaurant and confirm its hours; this is a chance to see what is convenient from the particular village you are considering.
One thing to check twice.
Get property-specific HOA, CDD and amenity information in writing. Neighborhood access and amenity privileges vary; a public park visit is not admission to a private water park.

Use the exact work destination and your actual departure time. Check the trip home too. A Sunday drive is useful orientation, but it cannot establish weekday traffic.
The real errands
Try groceries, pharmacy and whichever appointment or activity you repeat most. Check entrances and crossings, not just a straight-line distance on the map.
The exact address
Before comparing homes, verify school assignment if relevant, insurance quotes, flood information and the full ownership costs for each property. A neighborhood name is only the beginning of that check.
The second visit
Return at another time of day. Notice lighting, activity, parking and the route from the actual home. Write down the tradeoff you would happily accept—and the one you would not.

Jacksonville scouting trip FAQs
Can I compare Jacksonville neighborhoods in two days?
You can build a useful shortlist by choosing two focused routes, leaving room for errands and revisiting a favorite. Two days will not establish the right home, school assignment, full ownership costs or weekday commute.
Do I need a car for this scouting weekend?
For these Jacksonville routes, plan to drive between the named stops and walk within each local pocket. Check actual walking routes before assuming an address is close enough on foot.
Is Nocatee in Jacksonville?
Nocatee is a separate community in the Greater Jacksonville area, with portions in St. Johns and Duval counties. Verify the county and services for the exact property rather than relying on its mailing address.
Can visitors use the Nocatee water parks?
Do not plan a public day-pass visit from this guide. Ask the Welcome Center about authorized tours and check current resident and guest access rules. The county’s Nocatee Community Park is the public park on our route.
How do I open the route on my phone?
Choose a route and use the Google Maps route button, or open each stop in Apple Maps or Google Maps. Your installed apps and device settings control which app opens. Each stop has an address if you prefer another mapping app.
